15 Days of Hope Challenge

Yesterday was my best friend’s birthday. Only, she’s been in Heaven for almost a decade celebrating. Her name was Kelley, and if you’ve been around here for any length of time, you’ve heard about her. Or if you’ve read either of my books you probably feel like you know her already. She’s all over their pages.

Kelley and me on our last vacation together, 2 months before she went to Heaven.

After this many years, Kelley’s still teaching me. Her five year battle with leukemia was heroic to say the least. She fought valiantly, far exceeding her initial “months to live” diagnosis. All the while, she was brave, faith-filled, gracious, funny, strong, and a beacon of Hope.

I can’t think about Kelley and not immediately associate her name with HOPE. That was her greatest lesson to me, and continues to be.

She was hopeful through her whole journey—that she would beat this beast that had taken hold of her body—but also that people would see faith and truth shining through her. But most importantly, she had the hope of eternity, knowing she would spend it with Jesus in Heaven.

The true meaning of hope, the kind that does not disappoint, is hope that allows us to have faith in what we cannot see. Faith that even if the worst case scenario on this earth comes to fruition, we can still hope. Because there is ONE who is worthy of our hope. And he’s not ever going to let us down.

But there are days when it can all feel too much. Kelley had those days. I had those days as I watched someone I cared deeply about experience the ravages of cancer. There was pain to be sure. But there was still always a reason to hope.

I wonder, where are you at today? Do you struggle to find hope in the middle of your every day mundane, or amid your current crippling circumstance?

Are you single-parenting, fighting illness, managing difficult children, helping aging parents, battling depression or anxiety, or trying to survive unbearable grief after the loss of a loved one? Are you feeling lonely, isolated, frustrated or confused in the middle of your hard place?
